SERVICES

We provide clinical genetics services over the entire life span, including to children of all ages, adults, and those who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy. We are specialists in paediatric genetics, adult genetics, preconception & prenatal genetics, and cancer genetics.

Face to face appointments are held in our rooms at Newstead Brisbane, on the Gold Coast, and we are able to provide telehealth across rural and regional Australia.

CANCER GENETICS

Mendel Genetics offers genetic cancer services to individuals and families looking to understand their personal and/or family history of a cancer diagnosis. We can organise genetic testing for most of the common types of cancer (including breast, ovarian, uterine and bowel) as well as rare cancer syndromes.

Preconception, Pregnancy & Prenatal

Clinical genetics helps those who are planning a pregnancy and are concerned about the chance of having a child with a genetic condition. A genetic specialist is able to refine the risks of having a child with a genetic abnormality, based on your personal and family history. Our reproductive carrier screening test determines if a healthy partner is a carrier of a serious genetic condition. It provides valuable information about your reproductive risks and your chances of having a child with a genetic disease.

If a potential problem is detected during a pregnancy on routine testing (eg ultrasound or amniocentesis), a clinical geneticist is able to counsel you on potential pregnancy outcomes. We provide a non-judgmental service when you have concerns about your pregnancy, including for ultrasound abnormalities, abnormal genetic tests, prenatal screening results, or for a family history of a genetic condition. We provide you with information needed regarding any concerns during your pregnancy.

Paediatric Conditions

A clinical geneticist is expert at identifying the cause of physical birth  defects and provides advice on other health issues that your child should be screened for. Autism, developmental delay, and intellectual impairment may have a genetic cause. Clinical genetics can arrange appropriate tests, looking for a cause of developmental disability and can provide advice on the chance of recurrence in future pregnancies.

Adult Conditions

A clinical geneticist can provide expert advice to adults who have (or at risk of having) a heritable disease. Genetic conditions may include:

  • Connective tissue diseases, such as Ehlers Danlos and Marfan syndrome
  • Heart conditions, such as cardiomyopathy and heart arrhythmias (including long QT syndrome)
  • Kidney disease, including polycystic kidney disease and Alport syndrome
  • Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Huntington disease, inherited dementia, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and hereditary spastic paraplegia.

A genetic specialist will undertake a clinical assessment to better understand the underlying condition and organise appropriate genetic testing to help confirm the diagnosis.

Telehealth

We provide genetic consultations to regional and remote areas for people who have difficulties attending a capital city for a specialist appointment.
